Johannes van Leeuwen trabalha desde 1988 no Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), onde coordena o Núcleo Agroflorestal do INPA, e é professor de Sistemas Agroflorestais no Curso de Mestrado em Ciências de Florestas Tropicais. O Núcleo Agroflorestal se dedica principalmente à pesquisa participativa com agricultores dos Estados do Amazonas e Rondônia. De 1996 a 2003, o trabalho recebeu apoio através de dois projetos do Programa Piloto para a Proteção das Florestas Tropicais do Brasil do Grupo dos Sete Países (PP-G7): Desenvolvendo Opções Agroflorestais 1996-1999 e Desenvolvendo Opções Agroflorestais 2000-2003.
De 1986 a 1987 Johannes foi pesquisador - visitante no Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Florestas da EMBRAPA, Colombo, Paraná. De 1977 a 1986 dedicou-se à Estatística, Delineamento Experimental, Pesquisa dos Sistemas de Produção Agrícola e ao Cajueiro (Anacardium occidentale) como professor da Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Maputo, Moçambique (cooperação internacional holandesa). De 1974 a 1977 trabalhou na Holanda como assessor em Biometria. De 1969 a 1973 trabalhou no Melhoramento Genético de Árvores Florestais e na Biometria na Tunísia e Cuba (Organização das Nações Unidas para a Agricultura e a Alimentação -- FAO).
Participou de missões sobre agricultura familiar e sustentabilidade em Guiné-Bissau, Zâmbia e Nordeste do Brasil (cooperação internacional holandesa).
Johannes estudou de 1959 a 1969 na Universidade Agrária de Wageningen, Holanda, onde se especializou em: Silvicultura Tropical, Melhoramento de Plantas, Genética, Estatística Matemática e Sociologia Rural da Zona Tropical.

Johannes van Leeuwen joined Brazil’s National Research Institute of the Amazon (INPA) in 1988, where he coordinates INPA’s Agroforestry Unit and teaches agroforestry at the MSc. course in Tropical Forest Science. The Agroforestry Unit is mainly engaged in participatory on-farm research with Amazonian farmers. From 1996 to 2003 this work has received the support of two projects of the G-7 Pilot Program to Conserve the Brazilian Rain Forests: Developing Agroforestry Options 1996-1999 and Developing Agroforestry Options 2000-2003.
In 1986-1987 Johannes was visiting researcher at Brazil’s National Center for Forestry Research (CNPF-EMBRAPA, Colombo, PR). From 1977 to 1986 he worked with Statistics, Experimental Design, Farming Systems Research and cashew (Anacardium occidentale) as professor at the Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo, Mozambique (Dutch International Cooperation). In 1974-1977 he worked in Holland as a consulting biometrician (IWIS-TNO). In 1969-1973 he worked in Tunisia and Cuba on Biometrics and on Genetic Improvement of Forest Trees (FAO).
Johannes has participated in missions on small holder agriculture and sustainability to Guinea-Bissau, Zambia and Brazil’s Northeast (Dutch International Cooperation).
Johannes studied from 1959 to 1969 at the Agricultural University of Wageningen, Holland, specializing in Tropical Silviculture, Plant Breeding, Mathematical Statistics, Rural Sociology of the Tropics and Genetics.
