Abstract: The bio-productivity of the pejibaye must be determined in order to aid in certain aspects of the pejibaye breeding program now underway. To obtain a preliminary idea of this productivity, ten plans were studied in the Panama Collection at CATIE, Turrialba, Costa Rica. Stem and leaf dimensions were measured, stem density and leaf dry weight were determined, and annual growth increments were estimated, using previous economic production data, the annual growth rate and net assimilation rate were estimated. The plans studied were shown to have a crop growth rate of only 14±1.9 t/ha/yr. Probably due to inadequate agro-ecological conditions. The same plants, however, showed a net assimilation rate of 0.999±0.00172 g/dm2/week, which is quite good when compared to the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis, Jacq.). Given the high NAR and known economic potential of the pejibaye, it seems likely than even higher production may be obtained if these growth parameters are adequately used in the breeding programs.
